Gertie

Maybe there could be an episode based on Phil and Gertie, the grandparents, and how they fell in love.
They have the same kind of relationship based on Phil's stories. It could be a foreshadowing of Arnold and Helga in the future possibly?

Yeah, it would be cute if Arnold would recognize similarities between his grandparents and him and Helga XD

I think that's a good idea. There was a hint in the episode "Girl Trouble" about Phil and Gertie being alot like Arnold and Helga (Gertie always picking on Phil when they were kids) but no episode focusing on it. I think also in the episode "The Old Building" Phil talked about he and Gertie's first date but they were adults by then. How did they end up falling in love anyway? It definitely seems like an interesting step between being rivals as kids to going on a date at the Circle Theater. Very Happy

So what it should be based on?
I can only suggest an idea that if it's concerning approximately on 50's (just previous century) the new characters should appear, some history, father of Phil, parents of Gertie. How they [Gertie/Phill] looked in youth...what was their interests, habits, friends.
Perhaps some new facts about Hillwood.
Do I understand it correctly? Smile

We can get some of their (Phil & Gertie) friends who act like Arnold's friends. And we could get Jimmy (Grandpa's best friend) in the story too. Dunno, just shooting out some ideas ;s

Maybe we can combine this idea with "Series of Surreal Dreams", and make Arnold dream about being young Phil?

What about Gertie sitting down and telling Arnold her life story, only it's a bizarre mish-mash of strange stories (like maybe her stories of living in Victorian England or the summer she spent on the International Space Station? XD).

We could be left wondering about what's real and what's not at the end, but the parallels between Gertie and Phil, and Helga and Arnold could be alluded to throughout.

I don't think Phil and Gertie got together right away once they were teens, if Phil's story about WWII is to be believed, so it'd give us maybe that particular timeframe to work with where it's just Gertie?

Just an idea Smile

Hellerick, Retromanka - I really like the idea of transposing Arnold onto a young Phil...I think that'd be really cool.

You could cast the rest of the Hillwood gang in similar ways Smile

Yeah, kinda "Arnold Visits Arnie" but in old style.

BTW, should Gerald correspond to Jimmy Kafka?

1) Gertie tells story and Arnold can play the role of Phil imaginary in his mind (Gerald as Jimmy Kafka, Helga as Gertie). The effect of like it was reading absorbing book.
2) Or all story Arnold being Phil can be like he was sleeping and seeing it as a dream

I like the first idea better. It shows that Helga and Arnold's relationship is almost like Gertie and Phil's in real life instead of Arnold's imaginary dream.

Yeah we should actually

It can be like after grandpa tells a story to Arnold about Gertie, He can dream it and imagine that HE was Phil and Gertie was of course, Helga.
Then so on and so on about the story, dream after dream, The episode can end with Gertie being nice to Phil, but he wont actually tell (or get to tell) how they fell in love.

Or something like that.

I would love to see an episode about Arnold's Grandparents! They didn't seem to have a first date till they were a bit older so I wonder what spurred on the romance after so many years

Yeah, but if you look at the episode girl trouble when he has a flashback it was kinda brown and dull i think it would much likely be brown then black and white Very Happy

I was looking over this thread and it's kind of confusing. There are some people saying that they want to combine this with another episode idea...and now it looks like that idea fizzled out???

My suggestion would be to go ahead and start working on an outline of this episode, to make everything a little more clear than what's written in this thread.
Once that's done we will be able to see what you have envisioned for this episode a little more clearly.

Soooooo...reading the discussion written a long-long time ago I can make a very little summary:
1) 'Cause of some undecided reasons Phil and Gertie tell each in their own way how they fall in love with each other to Arnold.

We wanted not to be confused with the episode "The Crazy Series of Surreal Dreams" where Phil and Gertie were also mentioned young.
But as I see now it depends.
