Helga, Gerald and bonding

Post by Squirreltamer on Tue Jul 07, 2009 7:59 pm

Just gonna throw the idea out there if anyone would like to roll with it, but I would LOOOOOOOOVE an episode that's all about Helga and Gerald and them having to work together on something. Especially since this will be after the movie and before the Jungle Movie. I think they kind of need to come to terms with one another, especially if Gerald seems pretty okay with Arnold/Helga in the second movie.

I think that's a great idea!!
Not as the first or second episode, but later on in the season..
Kinda like the one in which Helga and Harold miss the bus (what was it's name? Buses, bikes and subways?), and eventually they find their way to the wrestling match by working together.. kinda.. We could use a similar plotline for Helga and Gerald, they start off as almost enemies, but end up as.. well not friends, but closer then before ^^

Are we actually going to try and do this as like a genuine season with our own sort of timeline or are gonna make it more of a free-for-all of ideas and plots, picking up the ones we really like and not really caring if the timeline of events is logical or anything?

I was thinking about Helga and Gerald moments in context of my House Swapping idea.

hehe. Nice idea. It be fun to see how these two react to one another xD Btw, you know the fanfic for 'Tutoring Arnold' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3648923/1/Tutoring_Arnold) ? But the problem was:

'However, the problem with this idea (thanks to Nat for the criticism) is that you have to keep in mind that although Helga is capable of being a very bright student, so is Arnold. After all, Arnold must have some talent in English given the fact that he was one of the top spellers in the 4th grade. Plus, if you have read some of the online interviews with Craig Bartlett, you will recall that Bartlett has said that one of Arnold’s essays wins his class a trip to the jungle where his parents are in “The Jungle Movie”. In addition to that, Arnold should be relatively good at Social Studies since he is practically the “god of diplomacy”, good at Math because he tutored Torvald, and good at science seeing his work ethic was in the episode “Biosquare”.'

What if Helga had to tutor Gerald? That'd be pretty interesting.

Sorry if you hate the idea though ;x

I'd love to see Helga tutoring Gerald...

Hey, what about Gerald finding out the secret before Arnold and Helga get together? Maybe he has to go to Helga's and finds some of her poetry books and puts two and two together?

Would Gerald spill (and find out Arnold already knows) or would he keep it a secret?

That would be interesting indeed Very Happy
We all know a lot of people know Helga's secret.. Lila, Phoebe, Mr. Simmons, Big Patty, Stinky?, and I think even Grandpa knows.. So I guess it would be possible to let Gerald find out, and indeed keep it a secret, even from Arnold maybe? That way it won't change anything for the new episodes or the movie.

I am afraid that Gerald learning Helga's secret would violate the rules. No episode should drastically change the relations between the characters. Would Gerald be able to act the same towards Helga, if he learned her Big Darkest Secret? He may get a hint, but not the whole picture.

Well, if gerald did know about Helga's secret, he could help with the whole Arnold/Helga thing. Hint to him that Helga loves him and what she said on the FTi building was SO NOT THE FREAKING HEAT OF THE MOMENT!!! And of course it will affect 'The Jungle Movie' when Gerald interupts their kiss (well, it's either a good or bad thing depending on your view.) But, yea, I honestly think that Gerald knew it but rather not tell Helga he knows. maybe find out through phoebe or something.

If Gerald knew Helga's big secret, he would tell Arnold:

"Stay away from Helga!"
"Why?!"
"Trust me, you don't wanna know why! She's nuts, just stay away from her!"

Re: Helga, Gerald and bonding

Post by Squirreltamer on Wed Jul 08, 2009 1:09 pm

I'm with Hellerick. Gerald knowing would change the whole show. Especially if he knew how deep her obsession ran. Gerald isn't Arnold and would probably be incredibly freaked out no matter what Helga said to make him think it wasn't so weird.

I always imagined that the reason Gerald reacts somewhat positively to their kiss in the Jungle Movie is because:

a) By that point he's sort of okay with Helga. She's helped them more times than he really knows, after all.

b) He's kind of suspected it anyway. At least on Arnold's side. The dude sometimes seems to get really fixated on Helga and Her Problems for short periods of time and Gerald NOTICES.

I wouldn't mind having Helga tutor Gerald, but I also don't know if Simmons would ever LET her be a tutor. The point of a tutor is that they're kind and helpful so that you can learn. Phoebe would be much better at that, especially when it comes to Gerald.

(that would actually make a pretty okay Phoebe/Gerald episode)

I don't want Phoebe to tutor Gerald, because we could find a better student for her. E.g. Harold. She could test her pedagogic theories on him. Like inventing a system of encouragements ("You haven't eaten for three hour already, right?" Harold gulps. Phoebe says seductively: "Hey look, this Mr Fudgie bar looks very tasty. What would you do for it?"), and supporting his self-esteem (through faking his good results).

What about Gerald figuring out the secret, and the Helga spending the whole episode hatching a plan to fool Gerald. By the end of the episode he could be back to thinking that Helga hates Arnold, but could have bonded with her somewhat.

And Hellerick, as for drastically changing the relationships between characters...angling towards Helga and Arnold getting together is *far* more drastic...And Helga hates Lila as much as Gerald hates Helga, and it didn't change the show once Lila knew Smile

Lila knowing Helga's secret did not change the show because she "always suspected that" anyway. It is not the case for Gerald.

If we're not making any major changes, then we shouldn't get Arnold and Helga together then either.

Like others said, I would say that having Gerald *explicitely* know that Helga likes Arnold would not be canonical. If Gerald were to find some huge hints, I wouldn't give it any dialogue. Just a staring scene. Like, you know how Arnold would sometimes notice a huge foreshadowing event but would say nothing? And you would only see Arnold's blank stare? If Gerald were to ever find out hints of Helga liking Arnold, I would give it that scene, where you show him noticing the hint, but nothing more. No dialogue, no action on Gerald's part.

So you do this very subtle "Gerald makes an observation" scenes every once in a while (but not too frequently), and these scenes (although sparesly scattered) would collectively suggest to the audience that Gerald has an inkling of what's going on between Helga/Arnold, which would be confirmed in the kissing scene in TJM.

I'd rather Gerald didn't find out about Helga's secret. It seems like it would shake some foundation in the show. Also, Helga shouldn't become an open book to her classmates.

I'd also hope that they can bond in a way that is pretty much separate from Arnold. I think the episode would be much stronger without a Helga/Arnold slant.

Re: Helga, Gerald and bonding

About the 'Tutoring Arnold' fanfic, I think I made a comment about that as well. That Arnold can be great at writing stuff like essays and great with spelling words/vocab but it doesn't necessarily mean he'll be good at Poetry too. There are people who are great with English class but hate/don't get/can't write Poetry since it's kind of different than just writing an essay about something. Does that make sense? And in the episode where Phil and Bob have the golf match, Phil asks Arnold to come up with a poem on the spot and Arnold pretty much fails at it XD Even Phil says 'That's the worst, most stupidest poem I"ve ever heard!' or something along those lines. So it's possible! Arnold can be good at a lot of things, but it doesn't have to be everything.

BUT ANYWAY lol Helga having to tutor Gerald in something would be a good way to get them together for a bit. I don't think we really know what subjects Gerald is really good at or not. Maybe English isn't his strong point? He's probably good at math since he seems to be able to handle money well (when he works as a cashier and when he's selling those watches).

I also agree that having Gerald find out would be too much. It should be a Helga and Gerald bonding moment that doesn't involve Arnold, that way they can see that they have more in common than just caring about Arnold a lot (Though Gerald doesn't know this little tidbit) which they do. They're both more realistic (and a bit more cynical) about things than Arnold is but are willing to help out even when it seems impossible. Helga always does it in the background though, so it'd be nice for Gerald to see this for once.

Re: Helga, Gerald and bonding

I actually think English would be one of Gerald's stronger points, since he's such a damn good speaker (he is the keeper of the tales...) and since he's good w/ money, I'd assume he would be good at social studies (the economics part, anyway).

And yeah, I'd really perfer a Helga/Gerald bonding moment where it isn't all about Arnold; where it's just about some common ground that Gerald and Helga share together that is not Arnold-related.

What I was also trying to say about my last post is that I think it's okay to give hints, but they should be so subtle that it's controversial. That is, the issue of Gerald knowing that there's "a thing" going on between Arnold/Helga should still be controversial / debatable by the end of the 6th season, only to be confirmed by the end of TJM.

I can't imagine giving Arnold a poetry tutor, though.

1) Canonically speaking, PHOEBE is the one that is bad at poetry.

2) Poetry and all other creative outlets are at least partially subjective. It's hard for someone to really say: "Your poetry is bad." because part of it is taste.

Obvs, that's sort of off topic, but I just find Helga as a tutor (especially a tutor to Arnold) kind of... illogical. She doesn't have the patience and doesn't seem to be getting super awesome grades, despite being really bright. If anything, I could see Helga being assigned a tutor, only for the tutor to struggle, because it's not that Helga CAN'T do the work. She just DOESN'T.

I dunno.

I agree, I don't really see Helga tutoring either.. She's bright enough, but she just doesn't care about helping people that much. If she'd really have to tutor someone, she'd try to get it over as fast as possible so she could go back to throwing rocks at the dumpster..

I think we should keep this idea in mind.. and just try to think of some other ideas for a Gerald/Helga episode..
Maybe we can find some inspiration in older episodes? There are so many bonding-episodes. There's Egg Story, Biosquare, Girl Troubles, Thanksgiving.. And a lot of 'non Arnold-Helga' as well; Buses, Bikes and Subways, a few Helga-Olga episodes..
So a lot of episodes about school projects, where Mr. Simmons chooses pairs. And I'm sure someone can come up with an even better idea, which fits em perfectly ^^

In the episode "Phoebe Cheats" Helga could not write a poem until she got into love-intoxicated state. It would not happen she was tutoring somebody. Therefore I believe if she were a assigned to tutor anybody, she would not be able to produce a single decent verse, well except some Wrestlomania slogans maybe.
