Things I learned from watching HA! Empty Things I learned from watching HA!

Post by funnybones021 Sat Feb 20, 2010 8:19 pm

Hi all,

I had this idea for a video for the Trivial Facts YT channel: a list of things Hey Arnold! has taught us over the years. So, I think that it would be cool to have anyone who learned anything at all from Hey Arnold! contribute to this video...basically by answering the question "What are the things I learned from watching Hey Arnold!?"

Then, I was thinking that the video (either clips of the show or a slide show of screen shots) would have something like a top 25 (or 50 or 100...depending on how many responses I get Razz) list of things people learned from watching HA! Or probably just a list, rather than rankings (I'm still taking a lot of flack for ranking "Married" #36 in the HA! episode countdowns lol).

You can tell me as many things as you can think of (but try to keep each thing short...~2 sentences or less); and it would be great to get both serious answers and weird, funny, goofy answers.

Please let me know if someone has compiled a list like this already, because I don't mean to steal anyone's idea (and I won't do it without their permission).
I'll post this to HA6S, and LJ (anywhere else?); and I also plan to make a video version of this request on my YT channel so I can get some feedback from people who aren't really hard-core HA! fans, or they haven't seen the show in a long time.

You can reply to this thread or contact me.
Thanks!

Hmm... what I learned from HA?

Well, in comparison to some of the other kid shows out there, I think HA really shows what it means to be a kid. Like, you should be enjoying your current freedom and simplicity associated w/ being a kid instead of trying to be an adult. You should never take your childhood for granted.

Something silly I learned? Never eat raspberries? Pigs would make pretty sweet pets? XD I want a pet pig!

What flaxen means.

Seriously, I had to look that word up lol. A lot of what Helga says is really advance. Some of it I didn't know, like the painting in 'Helga on the coutch', and I definitely didn't know stuff like that when I was in fourth grade.

I learned that I wasn't alone in the whole parent's don't give a hoot department.
also, I also learned about Edward Hopper.

the whole relationship between Arnold and Helga reminded me later on, about my own relationships from when I was nine.

That Carmen will forever be the coolest opera ever, in that at least if you don't know the true lyrics you can always sing them Helga's way...(plus Curly's voice was pretty dreamy!)

I learned that your cousins are parallel versions of yourselves. ...eh, personality wise that's true of my cousin, but she's younger than me and doesn't look a thing like me...

The girl or boy picking on you in grade school *probably* has a crush on you. Or comes from a bad home. Or both.

Perhapsormaybe just made me think of something. Because of that Carmen episode, I looked up opera songs. And that's when I realized that the only reason why I didn't understand most operas was because it wasn't in English rofl

*chuckles* I looked into "Habenera" from "Carmen" specifically because of Hey Arnold!...I recognized it's a foreign language, and ...it's just more fun to sing it Helga's way.

Also, that you better not touch Dino Spimoni's girl...or he'll sing a song about punching you.

Shocked that's hilarious. I didn't know you could not know that lol. The only English opera I know of is The Phantom of the Opera.

You actually reminded me of the one time I actually did go to the opera. I was on a date with a girl who said she really wanted to go to the opera. So, we went (neither one of us had been to an opera before...and neither one of us really liked it that much lol). Anyway, since none of the opera was in English, they had a lady who explained what was going on in between scenes. The problem was, though, that the lady's pants kept slipping down. And she kept having to pull them back up. At first she just kept going on with the script. Eventually, she started saying things like, "oops, my pants are falling down again".
To me, that was the most entertaining part of the opera lol. To quote Arnold at the end of What's Opera, Arnold?, "It was...interesting."

You're awesome. My boyfriend out-and-out refused to go watch an opera with me.

lol, well, it was only the 2nd date in one of those "it's complicated" types of relationships that didn't last very long.
I guess the point is, it's not something I would normally want to do; but since she really wanted to do it, I really wanted to do it too.

Ah, I see. That was still very sweet of you.

I also learned that even if your Grandma IS crazy and wants to celebrate the 4th of July on Thanksgiving, it's still best to spend it with your family, and to be thankful for what you have. (One of the more touching lessons)

...Also, never go on Stoop Kid's stoop, and if you're ever in a play where you have to dress up as food, do NOT be a Peapod, because then everyone will forget your name.

Peachcake: lol XDDDDD awesome lessons well learned!

Funnybones: It's true! Before that, I seriously thought the only reason I didn't understand operas was because they were singing too high-pitched or slow or something. XD And that must have been an interesting date! Because pants falling down makes operas even more elegant! Very Happy

You will always be inexplicably paired with your secret crush for nearly every school assignment ever. Alternatively, if you don't have a secret crush, you will be paired with the girl/guy who acts like they hate you for no apparent reason.

We are all special. (thank you, Mr. Simmons)

Here is what I've learned. Some of them are serious, some are humorous, but all are useful. Very Happy

1) "People downtown sure are friendly!" (Downtown as Fruits)
2) It's stupid to try to pretend to be someone you're not. (Helga's Makeover, Arnold's Room, Helga's Masquerade, among others)
3) Don't get in the middle of adult squabbles. (The Old Building)
4) You should probably not attempt to tip an ice cream truck. (Heat)
5) Whoever cleans it up first gets it (The Vacant Lot)
6) If you try to do everything on a "Fun List," you will most likely end up miserable. (The List)
7) If you are mugged, you should definitely become a martial arts master. (Mugged)
8 ) "Red and sweet and good to eat," etc. (Roughin' It)
9) If someone says they like the shape of your head, you should probably be suspicious. (Cool Jerk)
10) Just because someone hangs around with pigeons all the time doesn't mean they can't be cool.
11) Apparently, you can get drunk from smoothies.
12) If someone threatens to beat you up, just act like you are crazy, preferably with a pre-prepared dance and musical number to emphasize your insanity.
13) Creampuff teachers are definitely better than Lieutenant Major teachers.
14) There is no disease that can turn you into a monkey, thankfully.
15) You should probably not broadcast a Halloween prank claiming that aliens have invaded.
16) Playing hooky is probably not worth it.
17) If you cheat in a contest, your trophy will definitely start talking to you and driving you nuts.
18) You shouldn't let power go to your head.
19) Never agree to having laughing gas used in dental procedures if you have a big secret.
20) Don't sign your name on love poetry.
21) Never carve a voodoo doll out of soap, because weird stuff will happen.
22) Don't ride a roller coaster with a jinx.
23) Mean people usually have a reason to be mean.
24) Don't work for your friend.
25) Be wary of meeting your heroes.
26) If you win a free meal, make sure you redeem it at the correct restaurant.
27) Never recite private poetry in front of a parrot.
28) No matter how much you have in common with someone, if they don't like you-like you, they don't like you-like you.
29) Don't eat pork rinds before bed.
30) If someone tells you your summer love is evil, you should probably believe them.

Aaaand I could think of more, but that's it for now. XD
