The Nice Guy Struggles

Post by lduncan88 on Mon Jul 26, 2010 3:03 am

We all know Arnold is the prodigal "nice guy" and nobody expects anything different from him, nor should they. Being the nice guy isn't just a free ride though when you're a kid (as some of you probably remember). There are days when someone upsets you for being the nice guy. You go home and despite what your instincts tell you is the right thing to do, you just want to get after whoever's been giving you problems. Arnold, for about 99% of the series is portrayed as dealing with problems diplomatically and through reason (it's debatable whether the dream sequence in "24 Hours to Live" deviates from this). Still, I don't think we should deviate from this portrayal of Arnold this late in the canon, but what if after a particularly bad day (I mean one where he has to use every bit of resistance he has in him) he comes home and that night has a dream (that we don't learn is actually a dream until the end of the episode) in which he throws his instincts out the window and decides to start giving people a taste of their own medicine for once. At first, this can be superficially satisfying for Arnold, but by the end it can be shown how detrimental behavior of that sort can be. Thus, when Arnold wakes up, he's reassured about his good-natured ways. Before anybody says that "Eugene Goes Bad" already covered this topic, let me say that Eugene's motivation was external (i.e. the Abdicator) while Arnold's is internal.

I've always thought it would be interesting to see Arnold lose his cool-- the only one who can really push all of Arnold's buttons is Helga, after all. XD And, apparently, the Jolly Ollie man during heat waves. XD!

So, yes, it would be great to have an Arnold-centric episode focusing on him possibly NOT always being such a gosh-darned moral beacon. I was beginning to miss fallible, makes-mistakes-like-everyone-else Season One Arnold, to be honest. =/

I like this idea!

Well he loses his cool when things aren't fair ("heat") so. . .

well what else would tick him off?

Well, maybe there's something that involves him (in a big way) and no one uses his idea (or wants to hear), which compared to the other's it's awesome and the other's are crap. So yeah he gets frustrated.

maybe. . .

I remember reading acomic where they pass on this saying and when it gets to Phil it's "Arnold bit Helga' XD
Maybe it could be something like that, it's something good and goes bad

xD Ohhh, the rumors of PS 118 never fail to get misinterpreted.

(Shocked So, somehow I spelled misinterpreted right xD)

So, anyway, maybe Arnold could have saved Eugine from something... again... So it can go from "Arnold saved Eugine!" to "Arnold saved your jeans!" to "Arnold killed your jeans!" to "RHONDA! Arnold dissed your pants!"

xD Sorry, my brain doesn't work in the summer.

XD

Maybe ther's a school crime (someone stole the maskots costume?)

"Arnold saved Eugine from another problem"
"Arnold saved jeans from other emblem" (?)
"Arnold tamed teens for other jail" (XD)
" Yo, Urkel came from Queens for crail"
"Urkel said "oh" when he consumes crail in queens"
"Arnold pets the old when he dressed in a cold costume"
"Arnold gets bold and then he confessed he stole costume"
"Arnold stole the maskots costume"

As you can see it makes no sense sooooo XD

Well, I know who Urkel is, I just had no idea how he got into that patch of rumors xD

And it's okay, I can't think of anything better, either.

IMO, I pictured Arnold's bad day more as just being the result of a cumulative effect of a collection of smaller incidents throughout the day rather than just one big one. For example, he gets to school and Helga leads him to step into a piece of gum (again), in class his desk falls apart and everybody laughs at him, at recess his pants rip (he is growing Wink) and Harold, Sid, and Stinky won't let him forget it, at lunch Helga spills milk on his shirt, and finally after school he trips on Patty's foot while going down the stairs in front of everybody. By the time he gets home, he'd be irate. Maybe as the coup de grace, there could be a scene with a couple classmates playing "keep away" with Arnold's hat.
