I like all your ideas...so...they start to take up all this instruments? How this process would go? Are they starting to get it up while learning and not wanting to take part in the march?

I propose we go the "Band Geeks" route - they get accustomed to their instruments in music class and form a band, but things are less than harmonious and the kids have problems working together as a cohesive unit. In the end, however, they work it out and end up winning their competition.

As for incentive: maybe P.S. 118 is going to cut music class from the curriculum, and Arnold suggests that Mr. Simmons' class participate in the citywide marching band competition to prove to Mr. Wartz that music is worth saving.

Good angle. Gives more motivation.

When I was in high school I always played the really fun and weird percussion instruments like the bongos, clave, tympani, cymbals, triangle, cowbell, maracas, etc.

Yes, this episode could definitely use more cowbell.

lol, I agree! More cowbell! When I played the cowbell, that's practically all I heard because of the SNL skit and then I saw the Blue Oyster Cult live a few years ago and they didn't use ANY cowbell at all O.O

Some other more "exotic" instruments that are sometimes used in a band (in case we want to deviate from the norm a little bit) are bassoons, piccolo flutes, piccolo trumpets, and keyboard.
Also, a lot of bands will have several types of saxophones, like a few altos, tenors, and bari saxes.

lol, well I didn't mean that we had to use all of those instruments. That might start to be too many to have to work with. I just meant that maybe someone would want to pick up a more uncommon instrument. Like maybe Curly doesn't like the idea of playing a saxophone, but he really likes the sound of a bassoon.

man, now a jazz band sounds mega tronically cool!
great, I can't decide between jazz or marching?
does it matter? We wont hear the music unless
1. there are notes shown
2. someone says it's a jazz band
or
3. the band only has jazz instruments

but i'm still partial to a marching band. . .
but a jazz band is unique sounding!

Re: a band

lol, yeah, I still don't know what kind of band we decided on yet. I think a jazz band would be kind of cool because of the jazz themes throughout the show, but it's not really something to march to if we ultimately wanted to do a marching contest toward the end of the comic.

If it's a marching band, then we shouldn't use any of the bigger instruments like the tympanis, or an upright bass. And we also shouldn't use anything that would require electricity like a bass guitar or keyboard.

If it were a jazz band, then an upright bass or bass guitar would probably be used. A tympani isn't really used in jazz I don't think. Something like a Hammond organ could also sound really cool in addition to a regular piano.

I'd go with jazz now. . . ^^
I think it will give Arnold a bigger reason to start one, since he likes jazz.

anyone object or agree?

Yeah, I think a jazz band would be awesome!

It would also really simplify things since you can get some really great sounds in a jazz band without needing a huge symphonic orchestra. We could take out all the percussion instruments and replace them with a simple drum set (aka trap set). We can keep the saxes and trumpet and trombones (I would say lose the tuba, bassoon, and flute). We can use an upright bass or a bass guitar...maybe even add an electric guitar.

I kinda like the idea of a Hammond organ and a piano right next to each other. I've seen it before a couple times where one person is playing both instruments. If you're not familiar with a Hammond organ, Jim Lang has a great example used in a jazz piece here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jc532iDH9WY

In that clip there is a drum set (played with brushes), some kind of percussion instrument like a marimba or something, an upright bass, an electric guitar, and then the Hammond organ starts playing at about 18 seconds into the clip. It's got this really nice and unique sound to it. It's actually one of my favorite instruments as you can probably tell lol. I really like keys!
