Arnold and Helga sketches

Post by 8life0is0a0game8 on Mon Jul 01, 2013 3:08 am

I do need to practice the other characters, because so far I've only gotten Arnold and Helga. What can I work on to fit truer to the original style?

Hey Mutty,

If these are one of your first drawings of Helga and Arnold, I have to say that you did very fantastic!

On the first image of Arnold and Helga, you have their proportions pretty down pat. Which is fantastic. I really don't have much comments for that first image because it's quite well-done. Even the one that you crossed out looked pretty good to me. The bottom-right hand corner of Arnold in the first picture does resemble one of the earlier versions of Arnold, if that was what you were going for. I would say that's because you added additional lines on the top of Arnold's eyes as he is looking down, which gives him more of a hollowed-eye appearance that matches with the earlier official versions of Arnold. Later versions of Arnold (4th/5th season) tends to not have the outline of his upper eyes present when he is looking down, making his eyes "pop out more".

With the second image, you do have your personal style of drawing Helga that's quite evident. I did make an old tutorial on drawing Arnold and Helga, to their 4th/5th version style, in terms of proportion that you can read through if you haven't already.

I'm working on a fanart right now, here's what I've gotten done of the lineart so far. I feel like I'm getting much better at drawing Helga.

Awww thanks! I've been replying to almost everyone's comments, likes, and favorites on DA by sketching HA! doodles for practice. Obviously, that's a lot of drawings.

I made this really quick to practice drawing Arnold's head from the side, since it's a bit tricky.

LOL Helga's face is priceless.

I think Arnold's lips are a bit big. I'm horrible at explaining, so let me show ya instead.

I looked Arnold from the side on google images and found this one. From your image I just reshaped the head a bit, resized the lips and moved his eyes a bit closer to the front. I didn't move the eyes all the way to the front like in the reference cause in your drawing he's looking at Helga, who's somewhat beside/in front of him. In the reference he was facing toward Arnie and Lila and turned toward Helga. Since we're seeing them from behind Arnold and Helga his eye would be closer to his nose. You can move the eye further if you like. All up to you.

I noticed his head is actually more horizontal than what you have in your drawing. Just stretch it out a bit and it can work.

It reminded me of pacman while I was drawing his head. XD
If you look at it, the shape of his head looks like two pacman mouths that are open.

Anyways, since we're here why not go overboard? I know Helga would love this.

;w; Aww you're so nice. That really does help a lot. I have a lot of trouble drawing his head in side view. It makes sense to me from the front, but from the side I'm just like what? I'll have to practice this. That pose you did is awesome. It kinda looks like he's going to propose. And yeah, I can see them being way too big, but I couldn't find a reference for lips like that when I looked so I just sort of guessed.
Thank you so much.

That is an awesome drawing, and awesome feedback.

If you actually go to the episode "Love and Cheese" in season 4, where Arnold is thinking how he can woo Lila at the Cheese Festival, there is a scene where he is kissing the hand of Gerald. That would be a pretty good reference pic I think.

Do you think you can post a screenshot of it for me, or a link to the episode? I'm at a loss of where to find HA! episodes since they were removed from netflix. References from the show are always better than drawings.

Re: Arnold and Helga sketches

Post by 8life0is0a0game8 on Tue Jul 09, 2013 7:26 am

This one is less about being accurate and more about learning to draw them quickly so they don't look so stiff, as well as capturing their personalities. I kind of like this one, despite it's obvious flaws. (Messiness mostly) I keep drawing Phoebe like in earlier seasons, with more of an oval head. I think I need to practice her next.
Does anybody have a guide or tips on drawing hands HA! style?

Edit: Ahhhh I changed the hair, only to look back and realize I had it right the first time. Oh well.

lol Tendra that screenshot is great.

I'm loving the sketch Life ( I dunno what to call you anymore XD ). You definitely nailed the movement part! The only thing I would change is so minor, it's the little bow tail behind the front one I would move it a bit forward just to get a better silhouette. Other than that I just LOVE it!

I'll post some images on that plus how I usually do hands once I get home after work.

This is awesome work Life. I'm really glad to be working side by side with so many talented people.

Re: Arnold and Helga sketches

Post by MadMadisson on Wed Jul 10, 2013 12:03 am

Ok, so I'm gonna be totally honest, and I know it might suck to hear it (I know I hated hearing it each time a teacher told me), but if you want to learn to draw something, use the real thing as reference.

When I got bored in class I would somethings draw my own hand, and I wouldn't know it at the moment, but it was great practice.

Deviantart has pretty cool hand references right here. As long as you have a good grasp on how to draw a real hand, it'll be cake to do any other styles. Especially one that has four fingers.

The hands all depend on the type of character you're drawing. You can tell by looking at Harold's hands. Big bulky character, big bulky hands. It doesn't really always have to be that way. Mixing it up can make for pretty interesting character designs.

I've noticed that the anatomy in HA is kinda elastic. You can really tell when they bend body parts, like knees and elbows. It's a cartoon after all, so have fun with that, just make sure they bend where it's believable. That's what we artists do, suspend disbelief. Do it in a believable way and your viewers will overlook anomalies, and admire the story you're trying to portray instead.

So, the basic hand would be:

  • A circle for the palm
  • An oval (marked with blue) inside the circle. That should mark where your thumb will come out of.
  • I sometimes draw half a circle or curve of where I want the fingers to end.
  • The middle finger is usually longer than the rest, the pinky being the smallest.

I personally like to give hands diferent shapes. Like that one above is round, but sometimes I like to draw them square. Like the tips of the fingers would be square and such (kinda like these guys). Again it all depends on the style.

HA though, seems to stay with round. Or at least it seems to be prominent throughout, sticking with the elastic look (which is pretty neat for cartoons cause you can do so much with it. Crazy poses, crazy poses, crazy poses lol).

Wow, sorry for the wall of text. XD
Hope it was of some help.

Hey mutty! That quick sketch looks great!  I love how you nailed Helga's expression!

Even if you weren't comfortable w/ drawing hands, I felt you drew Phoebe's body well.  The one thing I would change with Phoebe is to shorten her neck.

With hands, if you also get a general human anatomy ho-to-draw book, they give quite some good tips on drawing hands.  The only thing about HA! that mainly defies regular human anatomy would be their heads lol

Great tips from Ana as well! Very Happy

Well them thing is, I can draw normal hands just fine, but something about drawing only four fingers just throws me completely off since it never looks right to me. It sucks since normally hands are what I'm best at. (When I'm not being lazy. These days I just toss a few lines in really fast and call it good.)
Thank you so much for the references MadMadisson, I'll probably sketch and draw some hands when I get the chance.

I agree with Tendra about the neck now that she pointed it out. I like the hands you drew on Phoebe cause they seem to have a different style that goes really well with the character, pointy and petite. =3

More Helga sketches. Drawing her helps me warm up for more serious art.
I think I made her legs too thick on the bottom right corner Helga.

Re: Arnold and Helga sketches

I figured I should draw something OTHER than Helga.
So here's snapshot kid. It's not very accurate because I accidentally used the original design rather than the one people are actually drawing in the comics. (It has some differences)

Oh yeah, and I'm hoping to get good enough to eventually replace MissMadison, since they said they were leaving the team. I'm under the impression that I've got less responsibility than most staff right now. (Linearts only take about 20 minutes since I'm just tracing lines, and it's really tedious but still easy.) Any progress would/will be slow going, but I will get it done when I can. Drawing HA! characters has become a favorite past-time of mine, so it'd be only natural to put that to good use. What I need to know is if you guys think I'm good enough to do pages yet, which is why I chose snapshot kid to draw. Less references means better test of skills, right? Ok.
