Well, maybe Phoebe mishears things. And relays them to Helga via walkie-talkie. Hilarity ensues.

Arnold: Okay, great! [sits] So what did you get today?
Lila: A ham sandwich.
Phoebe: [from behind trash can] O_O What? She can't stand this?
Helga: [over walkie-talkie] Stand what?

And of course she'll mishear things that make no sense.

Arnold: [to Lila] Do you wanna hang out after school?
Phoebe: "Do you wanna...catch trout in a pool?"...
Helga: ...What does that even mean?!

Arnold: I ate, maybe later on

Pheobe: *gasp* a date maybe at one!

as you can tell i'm having fun XD
okay it wont be exactly like that but I gave it a shot XD

Mmm...I thought maybe the concrete reason could be why Phoebe mishears?
Maybe Helga staying near her in that moment would be so nervous to ask every second? Or Phoebe would damage her hearing randomly?

Maybe there's to much traffic or she happens to be by a noisy area

Arnold: "So, Lila, can I carry your books?"

Phoebe: "Do you... want to go play with the hooks?"

Lila: "Oh, Arnold, that would just be ever so fantastic!"

Phoebe: "Oh, awesome, just like Spongebob and Patrick...?"

hmm. . . I like that idea of Lila saying it's sorta like a date and Pheobe thinking it is a date.( Mostly because it will freak out Helga enough to pull her pigtails off XD) But how do we incorporate that, I mean if it sounds like a date then what frieandly thing could it be?

OMG. We have to use the scene where Spongebob is referenced. It is totally amazing and I love you leili (I still want to adopt you as my younger sister by the way. D8 XDXD).

As for how Phoebe will mishear things, maybe she's placed a microphone that gets juice spilled on it so it crackles a lot? Maybe we could have fun with omitted words!

I have been thinking about this topic,and I have an idea how it could happen.
Let's imagine,that Arnold is afraid to tell Lila that he doesn't love her any more,and he writes her a letter and puts it into her bag or book(it can happen in classroom).Helga has left her textbook at home and asks Lila to give her tb,then Helga reads this letter/
And how she tells Arnold about her feellings?She reads a letter and discuss it with a photo of Arnold,and suddenly he comes up to her and the photo drops from Helga's hands.Thats how Arnold can learn about it....

Well why would he be afraid? I mean its easy enough now that she doesn't like him so. . . or is there another point?

I also think it's not so hard for Arnold to tell Lila about his feelings...and...it's quite strange for Arnold to just go and claim/inform "Lila I don't love you anymore and you need to know it!".
But I like the idea of the letter in a book! It can be used ^^

I'm a little confused. . .
I get the plot but now i'm confused about why Helga sends Pheobe out to spy on them. . . is it because she read the letter and she finds out Arnold does not like-like Lila anymore but she wants more evidence or is there something i'm missing. . .
